Much like lasts weeks post about the IT Band, there are many myths that persist about how to best treat plantar fasciitis. First, what is the Plantar Fascia?
It is a band of connective tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the ligaments and tendons from the lower leg to the ball of the foot and supports the arch. When this connective tissue becomes torn or inflamed as a result of repetitive stress, the tissue becomes incredibly painful. Plantar fasciitis can last for weeks, even months and pain is felt with every step.
Stretching the bottom of the foot seems like the correct course of action but fascia has no ability to contract on its own and it's the muscles and tendons that attach to it that are creating the tensile problems. Addressing the tight muscles in the lower leg can bring significant relief in the plantar fasciitis symptoms along with resting and icing.
